Every child dreams of having their very own playhouse and Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity is going to make that dream a reality for one family again this year. CVHFH will be holding a raffle of a miniature horse stable playhouse built by Habitat staff, Cedar Rapids RoughRiders players, and volunteers on March 20th during a RoughRiders home game. Funds generated from this event will aid in Habitat International’s relief efforts in Haiti.

“The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders are proud of our association with Habitat for Humanity and their mission to provide good, affordable housing for those in need,” says Jeff Jauch, President and CEO of the RoughRiders. “We are excited that our players have assisted in building the RoughRider playhouse which will be won by one of our lucky young fans.”

The playhouse will be on display at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena February 26th through March 20th when the winner will be drawn. The winner will also receive 4 blue zone tickets to the March 31st RoughRiders game or any 2010 playoff game. Raffle tickets for the playhouse are $5 each or 5 tickets for $20 and will be sold by Habitat representatives during RoughRiders home games or at the ReStore. Monetary donations will also be accepted to aid fundraising efforts for Haiti relief. Cash, checks and credit cards will be accepted.

“We really appreciate the support of the RoughRiders; it’s been a lot of fun building and working with them on this project,” says Traci Zieser, Sales Manager at the Habitat ReStore. “Habitat for Humanity has a far reach and the funds raised from this project will go a long way to help where it’s desperately needed in Haiti.”

The playhouse is a miniature replica of a horse stable complete with a latching door and a weather vane on top. It is unfinished on the interior for a rustic look. The exterior is white and green trim in honor of the RoughRiders colors. With fun additions on the inside including a wall mounted sandbox and chalkboard, this playhouse could be a child’s favorite place to play for years to come.
Finished dimensions of the playhouse are 6’2” wide, 8’6” long, and 8’10” tall. For ease of transport, it is modularly designed to come apart into seven pieces. Shingles and laminate flooring will be included but will require installation. The raffle winner will be responsible for transporting the playhouse to their home from the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry dedicated to eliminating poverty housing. Since 1988, Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity has built or renovated over 80 homes. Its most recent project was the construction of 20 homes in Cedar Rapids, as part of the 2009 AmeriCorps Build-a-Thon. Partner families make a down payment and invest hundreds of hours of sweat equity into the construction of their homes and other Habitat homes.

Habitat’s experience in disaster situations has demonstrated that when families join in both planning and cleanup work, it helps them heal by easing the sense of hopelessness and helplessness. Cleanup work lets survivors help directly with recover, contributing to their mental strength and emotional healing.
